Why We Need Paper Books and True Keepsakes

I absolutely love a good hike through woodlands, and yet I have to question the popular movement against paper books. My main reasons are these:

1) If we want to limit screen-time, we need another place to read.

2) We need to cultivate the patience to read without a screen or anything to click.

3) Devices are not biodegradable.

4) A seismic shift is in motion right now with AI providing summaries of all the information fed into it. How great was that information in the first place? Will AI summarize books of the Bible for the poor readers of the future? Sadly, it already does. Just search for a few books of the Bible on Google.

Our kids and grand-kids need to know how to appreciate paper books and how to have the concentration to read them. Someday, their paper books will be a great solace as the world around them enters an even more confusing time.

If the world’s future seems too remote, here’s one more reason. Most people do not really come to Christ until after their 20’s (we need a few betrayals and heartfelt losses to turn from the world). If you create an e-book now, will you really have it ten years from now? If you create a paper book and keep it tucked away, you will have it when your kid is twenty-five and questioning the faith. We strive to make every book one which can spark or reignite a person’s faith.

Keep a library, if only a small one of personal books. Teach your kids to read by teaching them to write. Teach them to keep and to gift their paper books. Teach them the importance of taking time to read a paper version of the bible that was given to them by someone they trust.
